I wasn't gonna do a build thread till it was closer to being done, but Peps wanted updates and I figured if I put it up you guys will badger me for progress and it will keep me motivated to work on it. Cool

So most everyone knows that I have a Formula Toyota chassis that I was going to build, but I refused to build it any thing less than top notch and it was going to take me for ever and more $$ than I had to get it finished so I decided to put it up for sale and build a street legal rig with the parts that I had and on the cheap.

I considered another Toyota, but I wanted something different. Peps thread about cool and unusual rock crawlers has some really cool rigs, including a sweet old Toyota Stout.

My first car was a 79 Ford Courier, but I preferred the smog exempt status of the earlier body style 72-76 so I found my new 73 Ford Courier on Ebay for a whopping $355

This is the pic from the Ebay add.

Only catch was that it was up in Auburn, Ca, so Tool Pimp was nice enough to go get it and drag it home for me for some gas money. Thanks again bro!

After I got it home I started looking at the frame and how I could swap in the Toyota running gear and suspension. It wasn't looking all that good to me so I decided instead to swap the body onto a Toyota chassis.

Found a frame from an 83 from Aaron up in Tehachapi for FREE! Thanks again for that Aaron!

Got that home and started putting my axles, suspension, and drivetrain into it.

I got the new chassis to where it would roll around on the rotors and then sent out the bat signal for some help to pick the cab up off the Courier and put it on the Toyota chassis.

This isn't as easy as it might sound because the courier has a completely unitized front end. The inner fender panels and core support are part of the cab and don't come off. Add in the fact that I couldn't get the hood off, the bolts are large phillips screw head and I was starting to strip them out so I left it attached.

Big thanks to Bert, Peps, Joey, Troy, Garret, Richard, Shaun, Teag, Eric, and Dave who all showed up to help move the cab over. (they may have had a few beers and some pizza in between work periods Very Happy )

Garret had to try it on for size before we moved it.

Good thing there were no seats! I don't know what he'll do when there are. Shocked

Now for the move. Many hands make light work.

At this point it was just sitting on there, but I can work with it by myself now.

Thanks again guys!

I got the back four cab mounts done. The rear most mounts were within an inch or so of lining up, so I just drilled a new hole in the floorboard and mounted them up using stock Toyota body mounts.

The middle mounts were about 8-inches from matching up so I cut the stock brackets off the frame and moved them back. Trimmed them down to fit, bolted up the body mount, and welded to the frame. My welds are ugly but I've gotta learn on something and I'd rather it be this than the F-Toy where you can see everything!

The front most mount is not going to work. You can see a bit of the rubber bushing at the top of the pic where the Courier body mount was. This is right where the steering box is going to go. Sad There is also no room for the radiator, so the whole front end is gonna need some creative solutions to get everything to fit.

I also cut off my front hanger and moved it back because I wasn't happy with the shackle angle now that the cab is on and the engine and everything is in. I forgot to take a before pic, but this is how it looks now.

I still have to add the seats, a cage, and my fat ass to the inside so I think this will come out ok when it's done.

Here's how it's sitting right now. The cab is mounted a little high, but it will help with the tire clearance and mounting it lower would be a LOT more work so I'm ok with the fact that it may end up being kinda tall when it is done.
